But sometimes, it can be difficult to tell when your brownies are done baking. Overbake them, and they’ll be dry and crumbly, but underbake them, and they’ll be gooey and underdone.

How Do You Know When Brownies Are Done?
Baking brownies is one of the easiest things you can do. To get the best results, you must take them out at the right time. Your intended product might end up being far from what you intended if you take a few minutes off.
Your brownie preference will determine how well-cooked they are. A toothpick test, timing it or looking at the brownies generally will tell you whether they are done.
Here are several ways you can quickly tell whether brownies are done.
- Take brownies out of the oven at the minimum baking time if they are very moist. You should take out brownies at the end of their baking time if you want moist but less “wet” brownies.
- It is recommended to bake brownies according to the recipe’s directions for fudgy brownies.
- Taking brownies out of the oven when they’re just beginning to pull away from the sides of the pan or when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean is the best time to take them out of the oven.
The following methods may help determine whether the brownies are baked to your satisfaction.
Check Its Temperature
Make sure the brownie’s center reaches the appropriate temperature using a digital thermometer. To determine whether the food is perfectly cooked, the temperature should be between 165 and 210°F. It is possible to get a cakier brownie if your temperature is higher.
Also, you can check brownies for doneness by tapping them lightly. Feeling how they feel and listening to their sounds are good indicators of completion.
When you tap the center, it will sound like you’re tapping a table or other hard surface, which means they’re ready.
Checking Brownies Using The Toothpick Test
Make sure the brownies are done by testing them with a toothpick provided by the trustee. It is a great tool for testing the doneness of different baked goods in baking.
You can poke your brownies just by sticking a toothpick in them. Repeat this process twice, once along the edge and in the center of your brownie. No residue should come off the edges of your toothpick when you slowly remove it.
When you remove it from the brownie center, your toothpick will be smeared with chocolate goo. You should try this if you like a chewy or fudgy brownie.
There is still residual heat cooking your brownie after you remove it from the oven, so don’t worry about it being undercooked.
Your brownies may take longer or shorter to bake, depending on the size of your tray. To make brownies in an 8-inch square pan, you should set your timer for about 40 minutes.
My preference is to bake the pan for 20 minutes, take it out afterward, sprinkle some salt on it, then drop it on a flat surface a few times. In addition to preventing the top of your brownie from cracking, this will help it bake more evenly throughout.
It is also possible to tell whether your brownies are done by looking at them. Upon opening your oven door, you’ll see a hardened crust forming around the edges. If your brownie is completely set in the center but not pulled away from the pan, its edges will still jiggle slightly.
After your brownie top becomes matte and no longer shiny, a thin film formed on the top of the cracked brownies should also appear.
How Can You Tell When Brownies Are Done Without A Toothpick?
My favorite brownies are fudgy, not cake-like. The toothpick test works only for cake-like brownies. I don’t wait for a clean toothpick since they’re overdone and dry. This is not good.
You should have a slightly shiny pan surface but more of a matte or semi-shiny surface without any wobble in the batter. Once they are perfect, they are done!
Intentionally, that’s what I meant. For a fudgy recipe, leave some shine on the surface. However, cake-like brownies can certainly withstand being poked with a toothpick.
It is better to take them out a minute early because the residual heat tends to finish the rest of the cooking.
It is also possible to poke a knife into it and see if it comes out clean. Aim for the halfway point between the edge and the center. Don’t cut into it if the center is still slightly wet. The heat of the pan will finish cooking it.
Since I like my brownies fudgy, I don’t use a toothpick because I like fudgy, and the toothpick will never be clean if your brownies contain chocolate chips.
Understanding Different Brownie Textures
Depending on your preference, there are several things to look for when buying brownies. An overview can be found in the following document.
Of all three brownies, fudgy brownies are the moistest. Put on your mittens and give your brownies a little wiggle when you take them out of the oven.
It is okay if your brownies still wobble slightly in the middle once they have been baked. It should have a thin, cracked film on its matte surface.
When you insert a toothpick into the middle of the brownie, it should come out gooey, but it should have a wetter consistency than a chewy brownie.
Likewise, it should take between 30-45 minutes to bake your fudgy brownies. The brownie is ready to be taken out of the oven when it reaches 165°F in the middle.
It’s hard for me to resist chewy brownies. Even though it’s not overly moist, it’s still tender and incredibly decadent.
Try poking a toothpick into your chewy brownies; the toothpick should come out clean on the edges and slightly gooey in the middle if the brownie is done.
To fully bake an eight-inch chewy brownie, heat the oven to between 165 °F and 210 °F and bake for 45 minutes. Approximately 30 minutes after you place it, check on it.
There are some differences in the ingredients used in cakey brownies compared to regular brownies. This cake is fluffier and drier, and there’s no crust to be seen on top but a thin, soft film similar to that found on chocolate cakes.
Cakey brownies are easier to bake since they require fewer wet ingredients. It will be ready after 20 minutes in the oven, but be sure to check it after that.
You can expect to pull out your toothpick with crumbs when performing the toothpick test. You should now be able to see that it’s done.

1. Can you put brownies back in the oven if they are undercooked?
That’s right, you can! The best way to cook your brownies to completion is to place them back into the baking tray or directly onto a baking pan and place them in the oven at the same temperature you first baked them at, usually around 350°F.
2. Can undercooked brownies make you sick?
It is more common for many people to prefer brownies to be a little undercooked than overdone. You should be careful not to get salmonella poisoning from raw eggs if you eat slightly undercooked brownies.
The high temperature you need to bake brownies to kill salmonella is 144°F, which is higher than the one required to kill salmonella at 135°F. Unless your brownies are visibly raw and wet, you shouldn’t have to worry too much.
3. How to tell if brownies are overcooked?
Whenever you poke a toothpick in the center, the toothpick comes out clean; your brownies are overcooked. As soon as you remove your brownies, the residual heat keeps cooking them, resulting in an unengaging slab of cakey, dense brownies.
It will also smell burnt when your brownies become black from brown, which means they’re overcooked.
Simple, right? That’s what I think. The four ways I have listed above will help you know when your brownies are done, so you won’t have trouble determining how thick your brownies should be.
