Sometimes, brownies are too dry, too hard, and too burnt. This is a common problem for people who are new to baking. Brownies should be moist and fudgy, not dry, and hard.
I’m assuming you’ve already tried a bunch of things to make the brownies softer. However, I have a few recommendations if you need help softening overcooked brownies.

There are times when you’ll get a batch that bakes up hard instead of soft and moist. For example, when you bake brownies, they are soft and fluffy on the day they are made, but the next day, they become hard and crispy.
Brownie softening has so many options, as I mentioned before. The method you choose will be suited to your needs and circumstances. Here we go.
1. You Should Use White Bread
It is always a good idea to use this low-and-slow method if you are not in a hurry to get a brownie right now. An airtight container and a few slabs of white bread are all you need for this trick.
On the bottom of the container, place a piece of white bread. Once the brownies are ready, add them. On top of the first piece of white bread, place another piece.
Although it may sound out of the box and wacky, it works. If you want the contraption to work, you’ll need to keep it in the container for at least a day.
2. Soften Your Brownies In The Oven
There are many things I love about the oven, but heating food isn’t one of them. However, the few extra minutes are totally worth it if you want a succulent, moist, and utterly soft brownie that’s oozing with chocolate.
If you want to soften your brownie, you can use your oven at 300°F. During the last four to six minutes of heating, add in the brownies. Keep an eye on them periodically to ensure they aren’t overcooked. The result of overcooking brownies is a gummy, hard brownie that doesn’t taste good.
3. Making Use Of A Microwave
Using your handy microwave will soften, chew, and make your brownies more delicious. It will only take a few seconds. If you microwave your brownie, make sure you don’t overcook it.
Things get a little weird with the texture. Depending on the strength of your microwave, heat your brownie for only five to ten seconds. Try wrapping the brownie in a damp paper towel. By the time your microwave beeps, you’ll achieve ultimate softness.
To add moisture to your brownies:
- Wrap them in damp paper towels.
- Heat for about 5 seconds on medium in the microwave.
- Repeat for another 5 seconds if needed to make sure the brownies are soft.
4. Softening Hard Brownies With Wax Paper
It seems wax paper works wonders for making hard brownies soft again. My favorite shallow container size is a 9×13 sealable plastic container lined with wax paper.
Put a layer of brownies on the waxed paper after cutting them into individual pieces. Make sure they are not touching each other and allow plenty of space between them.
Make sure the lid is airtight by placing waxed paper over the brownies and covering it with a lid. If brownies have been overbaked, this technique is excellent for softening the hard, crisp edges.
5. Cut & Wrap Each Brownie Individually
It’s risky to bake brownies if you aren’t going to eat them right away. However, you can keep them soft and chewy by cutting them into individual pieces.
Once your brownies have been baked, allow them to cool completely. Then, carefully wrap each piece in plastic after cutting it into serving-size pieces. The products can be stored at room temperature for up to three days in a container.
When wrapped individually, they can also be frozen for up to four months. After that, wrap them up again in aluminum foil and then in a large freezer bag or container after you have wrapped them in plastic.
Simply take as many brownie pieces out of the freezer as you need when you’re craving one. Then, remove the plastic wrap after they have thawed completely.
The method of cutting and wrapping each brownie serving ensures that your brownies will remain soft for a long time.
6. Cut When They Are Cool
When brownies are done baking, wait until they are completely cooled before cutting. It’s possible to harden a brownie quickly if you cut into it too soon while it’s still warm.
Even if the aroma of brownies baking has tempted your family into the kitchen, wait until they’re cool.
7. Baking Soft Brownies
By baking your brownies soft, you can prevent them from being hard. A brownie that is underbaked is better than one that is overbaked.
Make sure brownies are cooked a few minutes before the timer goes off. Use a cake tester or toothpick to check if the cake is cooked through.
The tester should still have crumbs attached when it is pulled away from a perfectly baked brownie. You have overcooked your brownie if the test comes out clean! The outer pieces of soft, moist brownies will be hard from overbaking.
How Do You Deal With Hard Brownies?
Some batches of brownies will inevitably remain hard, no matter what you do. So here are some of the things I do when this happens:
- I use hard brownies as the base for a fruit trifle by cutting them into small pieces. The custard and fruit quickly soften them.
- The brownie should still be in the pan when you poke small holes in it. Add ½ cup of sweetened condensed milk to the top. Serve warm after placing back in the oven for another 5 minutes.
- Cut the chocolate into cubes and use it in a chocolate fondue! Make the icing gooey by drizzling it over the cake. You’ll forget about the brownie’s hardness as soon as you taste the icing.
- Conversely, brownies are also great as ice cream toppings! Served warm with whipped cream, brownies are the perfect dessert.
Hard Brownies: How To Prevent Them?
My philosophy is to prevent mishaps before they occur, which includes baking brownies. It seems pointless to set yourself up for hard, undesirable brownies to begin with.
You can follow a few simple tricks if you want to avoid making hard and unforgivable brownies.
It would be best if you never stored brownies in the refrigerator. While keeping them cool may seem like a good idea, it will actually do the opposite. Just a couple of hours after refrigerating brownies, they will become hard and dry.
Why is this happening? Brownies become hard and crunchy at low temperatures because their sugar hardens and crystallizes. Low humidity in the fridge also causes the cake to dry out, leaving it crumbly and dry.
If there is an alternative, what would it be? They can stay on your counter for up to four days when adequately sealed. Do you think you won’t be able to eat them that fast?
The first thing I would like to say is that I admire your self-control. In the second step, freeze them. It is possible to freeze brownies for up to four months.
For this reason, it is crucial to wrap and secure them properly so that they do not suffer from freezer burn. Then, let them thaw completely before eating, and they should be good to go.
Don’t Cut While Warm

Have you ever overbaked brownies? The thought makes me cringe. If you overbake your brownies, you’ll end up with hard, unappetizing brownies. If you want to be sure your brownies are done, check them a few minutes before they should be.
Evaluate the situation. Are there crumbs in the center when you check it? If you want a crumbly texture, add a little bit of flour. In the absence of any, and if the pick is entirely clean, they’re overcooked.
What Is The Best Way To Avoid Overcooking Brownies?
Rotating the pan halfway through baking prevents brownies from overcooking. Several minutes before your brownies are supposed to be done, you should check on them. You should see them sticking to the pick as you pick up crumbles. It’s overdone to be completely clean.
