Healthy Protein Waffle Recipe
The following ingredients are needed to make these protein waffles:
- 1 cup nonfat Greek yogurt
- 1 cup skim milk
- 2 large eggs
- 2 large egg whites this is ¼ cup or the whites of 2 eggs
- ¼ cup honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons melted butter

Waffle irons usually have a light that indicates when they are ready for eating. It takes 2-3 minutes depending on the iron.

If you want to make your waffles taste better, you can try a number of things. There may be some suggestions that suit you better than others, so be sure to try out all of them.
In most cases, getting your waffles right involves experimenting and finding what you enjoy.
1. Eggs You Don’t Want To Miss
A little egg white can go a long way when it comes to making waffles fluffier, because it adds air and texture.
Baking powder doesn’t solve the problem, even if it acts as a raising agent. It will be crumbly, but it will also be dense if you don’t add eggs to the waffles.
There is no difference between using egg yolks or egg whites for waffles, but you must use something to make them. Use Aquafaba instead of eggs if you don’t eat eggs. Make sure you don’t miss the eggs entirely.
In case you are not familiar with Aquafaba, it is the liquid inside chickpea tins. Afterwards, you can beat or whisk the Aquafaba to make an egg replacement by separating the chickpeas from the liquid. That’s all you need to know.
2. Avoid Overcooking Waffles
The longer you cook your waffles, the tougher and drier they will become. In order to make the best waffles, the outside must be crispy, but the inside must be soft and fluffy.
Overcooked waffles lose most of their moisture, so be careful if you want the insides to stay moist.
The waffle iron should be heated until no steam comes out of it. That way, you should always have perfect waffles.
3. Avoid Using Too Much Coconut Flour
In addition to being extremely fibrous, coconut flour makes for dense waffles. The waffles will not be nice if you make them with too much sugar, but a little bit is fine.
Using coconut flour isn’t a sin, but you need to combine it with other powders and only use small amounts of it.
4. Use The Right Protein Powder
When a recipe calls for a different protein powder, you might decide to switch to your favorite if the recipe calls for a different one.
This is not a good idea, however. In spite of the fact that protein powders might appear to be the same, they behave very differently and have a variety of requirements.
If you have chosen to use the recipe that has been tested and perfected by the person who wrote it, you can be assured that it has been tested and refined.
There is no guarantee the recipe will work with any other protein powder besides the one chosen by the writer.

6. Preheat Your Waffle Iron
You need to make sure your waffle iron is really hot before adding wet ingredients to your waffles. A wet waffle is not a welcome sight, but the heat will help burn off the moisture on the outside, leaving you with a crispy shell and a soft interior.
It’s not a good idea to use a hot waffle iron to cook your waffle mix. For a good, crispy sear on the outside and to help evaporate the extra moisture, it must be really hot.
7. Add Moisture by Using Some Wet Ingredients
Moisturizing ingredients, sometimes referred to as wet ingredients, are needed for protein powder.
If you use hemp protein powder, rice protein powder, pea protein powder, whey protein powder, or casein protein powder, you will need to add moisture to improve the texture and taste of your waffles.
The ingredients must be moist; dry ingredients will not work. Waffles will have a better texture and more moisture if you add various ingredients to the mix.
Make sure you try out several moisturizers for cooking with protein to find the one that suits you best. Here are a few top choices:
- Mashed Bananas
- Cottage cheese
- Flax Egg
- Greek yogurt
- Icelandic Skyr Yogurt
- Pumpkin puree
- Ricotta Cheese

Cottage cheese is an excellent addition to waffles, and you won’t taste it in the finished product.
8. Use High Quality Protein Powder
You should also take into account the type of protein powder you use. If you want to make sure your protein powder contains no artificial fillers or unnecessary ingredients, read the packaging carefully.
Consider switching the type or brand of protein powder you use and trying a different recipe if you struggle to get your waffles right. You might be able to resolve the issue this way.
Here Are Some Substitutions For The Protein Waffle Recipe
Non Fat Greek Yogurt: Although we haven’t tried this recipe with other types of yogurt, regular full fat yogurt should work. Dairy-free/plant-based yogurt is not something I’m familiar with.
Skim Milk: Choose any plant-based/non-dairy milk to replace skim milk.
Eggs: This recipe has not been tested without eggs, so we can’t recommend it. It won’t work, I think. For the edges to be fluffy/crispy, eggs are essential.
Honey: Maple syrup can be substituted for honey. It is also possible to omit the honey, but it really gives the waffles a nice flavor.
Vanilla Extract: You can skip this if you don’t have it.
Melted Butter: Butter may be substituted with ghee or applesauce, but we highly recommend using butter. There’s nothing like it!
Whole Wheat Flour: Other flours have not been tested in this recipe. It is not possible to substitute almond flour or coconut flour for whole wheat flour 1:1. The possibilities of using oat flour or Gluten Free 1:1 Flour are also possible, but I cannot be certain without testing them.
Baking Powder: Don’t forget the baking powder.
Waffle Iron: We used a Belgian waffle iron for this recipe. Using a Mini Waffle Maker is certainly possible; however, you would have to adjust the batter/cook time accordingly.
Does This Recipe Work For Protein Pancakes As Well?
This recipe has not yet been converted into protein pancakes. Honestly, I have no idea how it will work. I would appreciate if you could let me know if you try it.
Is It Possible To Mix This Waffle Mix With Protein Powder?
Protein powder has not been tried in this recipe. Baked goods with protein powder can end up really spongey and have a funky texture. You can add protein in small amounts (1/4 cup at a time) and test the batter after cooking to make sure it doesn’t dry out the batter or make it spongey.
